Got your UK visa approval? Don't pack your bags just yet — there's one more step, and it catches a lot of South African crew out.
The UK has now transitioned to eVisas for many travellers, including South Africans. That means visa approval isn't the final step — you also need to create your UKVI account and link your eVisa before you travel.
Here's everything you need to know.
Step 1: Create Your UKVI Account
Before you start, you'll need to:
Confirm your identity
Add your application number
Confirm your contact details
Confirm your location
Create your account here: gov.uk/evisa/set-up-ukvi-account
Step 2: Link & View Your eVisa
Once linked, you can access and view your immigration status online.
This allows you to quickly show your visa at check-in, immigration, and boarding — without needing to log in each time.
What You'll Need
✔️ Your original passport
✔️ Access to your phone number/email
✔️ Ability to take a selfie for identity verification
✔️ Your Visa Application Reference Number (found in your eVisa approval email)
Our Recommendation
Once your eVisa is successfully linked and visible in your account, take clear screenshots of the visa page on your phone — including the visa particulars, your particulars, and passport photo.
Important Things to Know
⚠️ You must show your eVisa before boarding your flight to the UK. They won't accept the UKVI email stating "eVisa approved" as proof.
Airline staff and immigration officers will ask to see it multiple times.
Logging into the UKVI portal can take around 5 minutes, and the site can occasionally be down — you can also get logged out quickly.
⚠️ Linking your eVisa after account creation can take up to 72 hours. Complete this well in advance of your travel date.
